Neurosonography: anatomy of the fetal brain at 11-13 weeks' gestation

Tags: fetal brain, neurosonography, 4th ventricle, how to do, ultrasound technique, early pregnancy anomaly scan, intracranial translucency, fetal CNS

This training video clip describes normal anatomy of the fetal brain in midsagttal view of the fetal face. This scanning plane is routinely used for nuchal translucency (NT) thickness measurements at 11-13 weeks of gestation.

Brainstem (brain stem) is the posterior part of the brain and it consists of medulla oblongata, pons and midbrain (mesencephalon). The 4th ventricle of the brain is clearly visible as prolonged hypoechogenic structure. It is located dorsally to the brainstem. Intracranial translucency (IT) is the term proposed to describe the 4th ventricle of the fetal brain in midsaggital plane.
